Everything to know about the first-ever Fingerprint HAT for Raspberry Pi | PiFinger

PiFinger | Fingerprint HAT for Raspberry Pi

PiFinger, the first-ever Fingerprint HAT for Raspberry Pi Comprise of onboard Nuvoton MCU with an on-chip crypto-accelerator, Cortex-M23 TrustZone, and XOM facilities has launched on 24th of November priced at £36 at the super early bird discount. It allows the user to perform the communication protocol over the UART serial to the PiFinger with commands with the Baud rate 115200 bps or USB 2.0 full speed.

Compact and powerful design

PiFinger has a Compact structure that can be used for applications like Lock/Unlock Raspberry Pi, Security systems, biometric doors, and many other things. SB Components organization developed the PiFinger and made it useful for public consumption from the 24th of November 2020. The basic idea of SB Components organization for the PiFinger is to provide a technologically advanced fingerprint HAT for Raspberry Pi to scale up the efficiency of the user.

What is the Unique Selling Proposition of PiFinger?

The PiFinger made its formal debut in the market with the 2D capacitive fingerprint sensor. It is the first-ever fingerprint HAT for Raspberry Pi that makes it unique among other products. PiFinger is developed by SB Components after a lot of prototyping that made it perform the task with high accuracy that can increase the efficiency of the user. SB Components developed PiFinger incredibly advanced with powerful components and features. There is a lot of research and development done by SB Components for a better biometric solution that made the PiFinger more effective.

Specification of PiFinger

PiFinger is powered by an onboard Nuvoton MCU with an on-chip crypto-accelerator, Cortex-M23 TrustZone, and XOM facilities. Nuvoton MCU performs the task as an interface IC and control unit on the board of PiFinger which can serve for the high-end operations that require stability. You get UART protocol with the Baud rate 115200 bps or USB 2.0 full speed for the communication. It has an OLED display of 0.91” and has a storage capacity of 24 fingerprints. PiFinger consists of a 40 pin GPIO header and LED indicators. The matching mode of the PiFinger is 1:1; 1:N.

Power of Sensor

The sensor of PiFinger has the 2D capacitive Fingerprint area sensor with a sensor array of 176x176 pixels. It has a 508 DPI spatial resolution with an 8-bit pixel value/256 gray level that raises the quality of PiFinger. The sensor communicates with the board of PiFinger from the High-speed SPI interface. It has an Image capture speed up to 2MP/sec and consists of the 8.8mm x 8.8 mm active sensing area. The image ratio of length to width is 1:1. If we look at the ESD protection then it is +/- 15kV(Air mode). It is developed to perform a variety of applications in the different segments of industries. It would allow the user to use the potential and power of the PiFinger in numerous operations that would increase the efficiency of the user.

Performance of PiFinger

There are a lot of applications that PiFinger can perform and the security of the data or premise is one of them. The PiFinger should have high stability with the power to perform the task in a better way. PiFinger is one of the powerful devices that comes with the open-source license that people can use in their DIY projects or their industries.

PiFinger consists of a sensor that is based on capacitive coupling. It can detect and measure anything that is conductive or has a dielectric, different from the air. The sensor has a hardened surface and enhanced ESD immunity. PiFinger is programmed to compare and register at most 24 fingerprints as well as recognition algorithms for fingerprint comparison. It works with high accuracy because of the high comparison speed that enhances the quality of work.
